Dog of the Year 2010

Meet Pearl, ASPCA's Dog of The Year 2010 . She was nominated during the ASPCA’s annual Humane Awards Luncheon at the Pierre Hotel last November 11, 2010. Pearl, who is a Labrador, was first found in a shelter by volunteers from the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation (SDF) based in Ojai, CA. She then became a certified search dog and in January, together with her handler, Ron Horetski of the Los Angeles County Fire Department were deployed to Haiti on a rescue mission.

They and six other SDF teams spent two weeks digging through concrete and debris to locate survivors, successfully saved 12 people.

Cat of The Year 2010

ASPCA's Cat of The Year 2010 winner is Henry, who lost a leg and inspired a series of children’s books by Cathy Conheim that aim to help people understand and feel compassion toward those with disabilities. The books have been distributed to Hurricane Katrina victims and a children’s amputee project in Haiti. Wow. Never heard of a book being inspired by a disabled cat before.

Shine on,
Del
